Guidance: Infiltration test

Based on Vidacycle’s approach.

You can download the 1-page pdf guide for your reference (see Article Attachments, below).

  1. Locate your chosen sample site: If you have done the test previously, use the GPS mapping feature on Soilmentor to find the same spot.
  2. Clear vegetation: Remove all debris, weeds and vegetation where you aim to set the tube – either trim down or cut through with a knife.
  3. Insert tube: Push tube into the bare soil so that it is at 3 inches (75mm) depth – with the soil inside
  4. Firm soil: Firm soil gently on the inside of the tube. If using plastic wrap, cover the soil and inside of the tube with a wrap to protect the soil surface.
  5. Add water: Measure out 450ml of water, pour into the tube, and start timer
  6. Stop the timer and record: Stop the timer when all the water has disappeared into the ground, and the surface is just glistening. Record the time in Soilmentor to the nearest half minute under ‘Infiltration rate – 1st inch (mins)’.
  7. Repeat steps 5-6: Record this second time in Soilmentor under ‘Infiltration rate – (2nd inch) mins’. This second-inch reading gives a better indication of your soil’s ‘real’ infiltration rate – the first test may just be wetting the soil. If the soil is already saturated, you may find there is little difference between the times.
